Part One: Initial Consultation

This 100-year-old home was leaking air at nearly every wall.

Her late husband had spent years trying to tighten it up without ever finding the cause.

An insulation contractor she paid before us took the money and left the work undone.

On our first visit, we photographed what was really happening behind the siding, so she could see it for herself.

Some Issues With Their Old Exterior Were...

air leaks

Air moved straight through the century-old framing, so the furnace could never keep up.

blank

A prior contractor left hidden gaps in the walls that only showed up during demo.

blank

A past contractor hung the original siding improperly, so the wall was never sealed.

blank

The old window frames had loosened and let air in at almost every opening.

blank

Nothing capped the base of the wall, so outside air rose up under the siding.

Part Two: The Design & Build Plan

The goal was energy efficiency, so we sealed the house at the frame, the foundation, and behind the siding.

Windows and doors

Set new Provia Endure windows with gray-tinted glass, then hung a 20-gauge Legacy Steel entry and full-view storm door.

blank

Stripped and sealed

Stripped the house to bare wall, ran fan fold R4 board, capped the foundation, and doubled the vapor barrier throughout.

New siding

Wrapped the house, the detached garage, and the shed in slate-gray Mastic siding so the three buildings match.

Part Three: The Time Schedule

We ran the job in phases around her schedule. Taken consecutively, the full exterior is about 5 days of work.

Phase Time on site
Windows, main floorAbout 1.5 days
Entry & storm doorUnder a day
Remaining windowsUnder a day

Meet the Owner

Hi, I’m Geoff Shinn, owner of Home General. Since starting out in the home improvement industry as a young man, I’ve spent over 35 years mastering what truly makes a home exterior great.

Leading a major brand in the window installation field allowed me to see up-close the huge gap between what is promised and what was delivered. I realized there has to be a better way to serve customers and equally give them more value. I founded HomeGeneral to close that gap.

When we work on your home, we’re doing more than just upgrading windows or siding. You trust us with your space, and we always honor your trust by providing the best service possible, from A to Z.

Working with Geoff and Ray was a great experience. They’re both knowledgeable, experienced, and good communicators. The window I had replaced looks great and most importantly it’s the proper window and installation now so I feel more secure. The entire process went well from start to finish.

I had 7 windows replaced, 2 of which were being made into 1 larger window. Ray at Home General did an amazing job. They all look fantastic, inside and out. Everyone kept in great communication between the order and install dates, and were professional and friendly. Concerning price/value: a different local company tried to charge me over $18K MORE for the same exact windows. A third was even more than that. HG is a small, but reliable company.
